Recently I heard about an elderly couple whose daily schedule was so busy and regimented
that they didn’t have time to meet their new neighbors.  That’s too busy!  Yet too many of us
do too many things, believing everything to be equally important.   When leisure activities
are included in our list of “must do” activities – children’s or grandchildren’s sports, trips to
the lake, ball games, etc., life can be overwhelming!

We wonder why we’re exhausted, broke and unhappy.  We wonder why our pursuit of
happiness leaves us anything but happy.  We wonder, yet the answer is obvious.  We’ve
pushed God to the periphery of our lives, choosing to worship and serve Him when it’s
convenient, giving Him, in effect, the leftovers of our lives.

We’ve forgotten God’s first commandment, which is simple but encompasses so much: "You
shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3).  We’ve ignored Jesus when he tells us,
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Take time for God this week.  Read his Word, the Bible, beginning with the Gospel of John.
Go to church Sunday morning instead of sleeping in or going to the lake.  Pray on a daily
basis.  Reevaluate your family activities and ask yourself if they really bring you closer to
your family or just keep you busy.  Visit someone you’ve been meaning to see for months -
an aunt or grandparent or the neighbor next door.

If you’re too busy for God, then you’re probably too busy for others, even those you love
the most.  Most likely you’re also too busy for yourself and not really enjoying life to the
fullest.

Take Jesus at his word and change your life.  You’ll be glad you did!  “But seek first [God’s]
kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:
33).
